SPOZ - THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
a lot of us gibbering primates would like to think that we're important.. that we're something of substance.. that history will chisel us in stone and have pidgeons shit all over us.. that people will remember us.. that society will plant candles in front of small mishapen effigies of ourselves and worship it for generations to come.. and, more importantly for our egos.. that maybe.. one day.. we will have reached such soaring lofty heights of notoriety, infamy and universal acclaim.. that some pigheaded movie studio will deem fit to bankroll the latest music video hack director into producing the mtv movie of our lives.. (starring a much more screen friendly looking actor than our ugly selves..) and in doing so.. to con the yooof (sic) demographic audiences into sharing our exciting adventures (translation: wall paper chewing mediocrity) they'll machine gun the script relentlessly with cheesy musical montages.. (it's like the fast forward button.. but.. arty!).. and it is at this moment we may like to wonder.. what music is worthy to form these montages.. and thus make the movie SOUNDTRACK to our lives?
likely with this in mind.. for the past few years of so I've assembled a playlist collection of 300 of my favourite songs in MP3 form.. I've had this playlist going for at least 5 years.. initially thru a lazy necessity of needing randomly chosen music that could run continuously for long enough to keep me from reaching for a new CD every hour (essential for when your "in-the-zone" working several hours on a particular design contract) and now more useful for playing at parties n crap when you couldn't be arsed choosing a CD to play (or just wanna show off just how cool you think your taste in music is) I arrived at 300 songs.. since, it amounted to approximately 24 hours of music (give or take) and about 1-2 gigabytes of MP3's.. nice and compact.. and yet diverse and expressive enough to cover a whole gamut of obscure emotional brain states I might float thru at any random given moment of day..
For the last 5 years.. this playlist has been subject to Darwinian natural selection forces.. as new songs were introduced.. I had to knock out an equal amount of "poor performers" to keep the 300 number equlibrium.. evolving a playlist specific to my unique tastes.. a blueprint of my personality.. the movie soundtrack to SPOZ's life.. so I reckon by now, it must be pretty damn spot on.. nothing in this list is deadweight.. it's all killa.. no filla.. (it would hafta be to survive all the new stuff I keep adding..)
and considering I must have an out've control ego (hey, why else would anyone publish a blog?) I thought I'd share this playlist with you chimps.. it's been up as a link on this site for a while (see? it's that tiny link up top that says spoz's fave - 300 playlist ).. and in doing so.. I'll present here, in vaguely regular postings.. new songs the spoz recommends.. songs you might just like..
presenting.. SPOZ - THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK.. volume 1
GOLDFRAPP - TWIST
yeah.. ok, I know.. I'm probably just jumping on the bandwagon at a late point here.. wot with all the damn publicity of late for their new album "Supernature" and that crazy front woman Alison Goldfrapp having her picture plastered all over the music press in the last few weeks.. I might've been a bit influenced from seeing her publicity photo's too.. going "wooo.. gimme some of that".. and then rushing to download a bunch of their stuff.. I admit it.. I'm a dumb male.. and sometimes some freaky hot and mentally unstable psychotic of a blond woman who vaguely resembles Buffy the Vampire Slayer doing wacky electroclash porn indie rock are all you need to entice me.. either way.. I downloaded the LATEST album "Supernature" and thought it wuz utter shite (too wishy washy and floaty).. so I didn't buy into all their publicity as intended.. but, thankfully that didn't turn me away from the good stuff.. since prior to that.. I delved into their 2003 release "Black Cherry".. a damn fine album too.. and discovered (rediscovered?) this song.. yeaaah.. gotta love the addictively churning electro basslines.. funkin' drum machine beats.. and them crazy dark porno vocals.. oooohyeaaah!
PLUMP DJ'S - PRAY FOR YOU
I've seen mention of these guys for a few months now.. on various music forums.. more recently in street press.. hailing these guys as the next best thing.. since.. um.. Freestylers I guess.. perhaps they'll be soon forgotten again like Freestylers? eh.. who knows.. either way.. I 'd seen enough thrown around about 'em.. so I thought I'd download one of their albums to find out for meself.. and as I usually do (see above) I skipped their latest album "Saturday Night Lotion" doing the promo rounds of late.. and instead aimed for "Eargasm" their 2003 release.. and yeah.. not a bad album.. mostly instrumental.. mostly the same sort've homogenous sound.. a little reminiscent of Ftreestyler's "Raw As Fuck".. with that nuskool sounding drum n bass bassline grinding breakbeat fusion shit going on.. most of it.. although good.. was soon forgettable.. but this song in particular stood out and caugh my ear.. it reminds me of Chemical Brother's "Out Of Control".. that hypnotic blend of 80's synth new wave with the vocals (New Order / Soft Cell / The Cure) mixed with funking hammering smooth electro.. I dunno if this song is a Plump Dj's remix of one of them new run of new-wave bands (The Bravery.. etc..) or an original song.. but either way.. can't get enough of it.. if I wuz crazy enough.. I'd attempt to write a song just like this.. this sounds like wot the future of electronica really should be..
SCRIBE - NOT MANY
I was very familiar with this song.. but considering how overly hyped the whole damn thing has been since sometime last year and with a friend of mine (hi stuckey) chanting his freaking name every two seconds.. "WOOOOO IT'S SCRIBBLE!!!! YEAAAAHH!!!! SCRIBBLE!! HE'S DA SHIT!! YOU GOTTA HEAR DIS SHIT MAAAN!!! OOOOOO HE'S PLAYING LIVE!!! YOU GOTTA SEE HIM LIVE!!!" (yeah shuddup enough already.. I already saw 'im live twice.. is that good enuff?) I was somewhat numb to actually appreciating his stuff.. it happened in the past with Queens of the Stone Age (took a year past the hype for me to appreciate them) and System of a Down.. if only people would stop ramming shit down me throat all the time.. I might actually have time to enjoy the crap on me own level.. *ahem*.. aaanywaze.. wot can I say about this song that hasn't been said a million times before?.. the dude rhymes like a laser beam dictionary.. it has that real addictive nutty horn section shit going on.. and that crazy hooting noise he does? classic.. this mad fucker's a bouncy castle block rocking party anthem..
THIEVERY CORPORATION - LEBANESE BLOND
likely an old(er?) classic that's been doing the rounds for a while now (I can remember hearing bits of it floating around for a few years now on radio) but it only really hit my attention after seeing the movie GARDEN STATE a few weeks back - giving me enough of a taste to want to scan for it in the movie soundtrack credits for a name so I could download the puppy.. it's like a lot've songs in this stoner vague / made-for Ministry-of-Sound-Chillout-compilation subgenre.. they're so blissfully vague (and you're likely so out've it at the time) that you can never actually place who the hell writes 1/2 of these songs.. and likely.. it's a one-hit-wonder by an artist who's destined to disappear into obscurity (everyone who loved their song at the time was likely way too stoned to even consider rushing to buy the single).. only to leave you months later scrambling to find the damn thing online when the mood hits you.. (like that damn "Bug Powder Dust" song.. it's freaking brilliant.. but I never seem to be able to find the original!!?).. still, gotta love this song.. there's something about that blend of middle eastern sitar wackiness with doped up triphop beats and some smooth jazzed out singer that makes you want to come back for more.. and it makes me wonder.. anyone know wot album of theirs this came from? I'd like to hear some more.. (is it any good?)
yup.. that rounds out my latest playlist additions.. download 'em all! (or better yet.. buy their CD you mp3 stealing baaaastards!)
