A DRAGON'S HOARD
there's something distinctly insane in the act of ripping over 350 CD's worth of music into MP3 form (over 5000 files from a broad spectrum of musical genre, mood and tastes) distilling them into various folders and subfolders, storing them on a tiny 40gigabyte portable harddrive, loading them all into the one MP3 playlist, setting it to random and then pressing "PLAY"..
We ain't talking no wimpy CD stacker here with 5, 10, 50 or 100 CD's.. fuck that.. this is waaay beyond those pub jukeboxes that only play 60 or so "smash hits" compilations of crappy one hit wonder 80's bands and 70's AM radio bongrock.. oh no.. this is a whole other level of insanity.. it's only till you've done something THIS crazy that you really begin to appreciate the true nature of "RANDOM PLAYLIST".. yup, this shit's a real EAR opener.. listening to those first few hours of the strangest of b-side cuts, stoner gibbering funk instrumentals, gonzo interludes and one minute skits, braindamagingly weird electro bleeps and systemic harmonic corruptions, eclectic twitchings on the edge, hardcore industrial skull splitting noise.. songs long since forgotten at the end of CD's, skipped over, left to gather dust and ignored.. now flashing before your ears.. a psychedelic mishmash of amnesia.. and you wonder to yourself.. "what the FUCK is all this!!?.. do I OWN this??".. you find it funny, that although it's IN your collection.. you can hardly recognise a 1/4 of what's flashing before your ears..
You come to realise just how little you really DO hear.. those same 40 songs in the charts.. those same 40 songs cranked in the shitty nightclubs.. radio repeating them to the point of nausea.. those same select few olden goldies on the fossil stations.. those same idiotically catchy indie fuzz pop or hiphop tracks on the indie networks played to death simply because of a colourful use of the word "FUCK".. only to be replaced next week by the next novelty song abusing the word "CLITORIS".. reaching for those same CD's in your collection.. playing them over and over on your home PC, your stereo, the car.. the bus.. you know all the words.. endless repeat.. grinding scratches all over them.. everyone bringing the same few CD's to parties.. playing the same songs.. everyone sampling everyone else.. endless covers.. deja vu.. the song remains the same.. shit.. I think I read somewhere that they release over 10,000 CD's worldwide each year.. and how many of those do you hear about? of what fraction of those do you buy? play more than once?
it's only till you do something like this that you truly appreciate the full insanity of music.. the true variety and colour of the human animal and it's capacity to cook up some seriously weird shit.. yup, when 40 of the worst repetitive recycled shite is rammed down our throats on a weekly basis.. when we're indoctrinated by such limited choice.. such a limited world view.. pointless bling bling and bullshit.. this is the perfect escape.. all of outer space in a nanospace.. freedom of choice.. musical democracy..
yup.. having a portable MP3 player is a damn cool thing :)
