IDIOT IN A MUSIC STUDIO - PART I.
most of my waking life, my thoughts, my lunatic drive, my crazed obssession.. is usually bent on one thing.. nooo.. it's not the ONE RING to rule them all.. I'm not freakin' GOLLUM.. (although after a hard weekend.. the resemblance IS uncanny..), obviously considering how long I rant about it like a gibbering fool.. it's MUSIC.. cant get the shit out've my head? might as well make the stuff..
so.. here, in a continuing series, I'll feature a current musical work-in-progress from start to finish..
well fukkit.. wot ELSE am I gonna write about? my personal life? HA!! yeaaah RiiiiiGHT!!
so.. here's my current work-in-progress
the title for this song - IT HAS A SHADOW
our songs almost always starts with the title.. even before you think up the sounds or construct anything you gotta have the cool title to anchor it all on.. otherwise, it's an uphill battle..
knowing how hard it is to come up with cool ones on the spot.. I keep a growing list of them.. acts as a shorthand for storing music ideas, since each title suggests a mood.. each mood has its own sounds..
I think it came up with this title in a random conversation I had online about 6 months ago.. the sorta title that suggests all sorts of crazy feelings of paranoia, primal fear, a vague sense of an unknown threat looming unseen over the horizon.. a whole rising panic, fear of impending mortality..
I like how vague it is, how many directions it can be taken.. and as I've learnt.. the best way to make a track seem intellectual and profound, isn't to fill it with idiotically complex lyrics.. but to make it so blissfully vague, and yet suggestive of something.. people will think you're hiding something.. they'll sense deeper layers and interpretations of something, which inherantly is quite simple..
next comes the style of the song..
I knew I wanted to make more INSTRUMENTALS.. coz hey.. instrumentals are FUN!
instrumentals are quick to write, quick to the point, they're self-contained worlds of sound..
and I thought we needed more instrumentals.. considering how MANY freakin' full-vocal tracks I've written in the last year (6 out've 8 of the songs written), it wuz time to get more instrumentals..
I wanted to make it BREAKBEAT.. coz, I dunno.. lately, I've been digging up all the 'oldskool classics in my collection, the 1st Chemical Brothers album, Prodigy's "Jilted Generation", a whole selection of crunchy breaks and textured yet simple constructs..
another thing I wanted to do.. with to make this song MELODY based.. something I dont usually do.. something I usually consider a weakness.. I rarely write melodies, so.. I can't be too good at 'em.. looking to address that.. I thought, just for laughs.. I'd write the melody FIRST.. then wrap the rest around it.. make it a feature for a change..
and I thought.. why not make it a shit scary piano type sound.. all spiky and terrifying..
and so, with those thoughts in mind..
I flipped open my copy of REASON 2.5 and started sketching out something..
and here we have it..
the first demo of this work-in-progress
