BIG FREAKING DAY OUT
one week later..
here's my blow by blow quick review of this year's ADELAIDE BIG DAY OUT..
coz.. um, I dunno.. some people were actually asking me wot I thought..
um.. seriously, why? wot does my opinion hafta do with this.. WHY ARE YOU READING ME!!?? HUH!??
(ahem..) nevermind.. I get a bit like that sometimes..
BEAT SMUGGLAZ - 12:30PM to 1:15PM
well, seen these guys enough times at the RHINO ROOM.. and sometimes, despite how cool it is to have local acts you know at the BIG DAY OUT, why watch 'em?? they're gonna be playing another gig in a week's time at the RHINO ROOM anywaze.. oh sure.. I know.. you get them on a big stage.. with a big PA..
eh.. I dunno.. guess I like local bands doing pub gigs / club gigs better.. it always seems like a funkier vibe.. more intimate surroundings.. more in key with their sound.. or something..
but, shit.. wot am I saying.. WE tried to get onto the BIG DAY OUT this year!!??.. heh..
anywaze.. these guys were good.. they looked weirdly hungover tho'.. dunno why.. but, yeah.. they seemed at ease on stage.. going loopy.. good stuff.. (nothing special tho'..) but yeah, seemed a bit empty up there..
TIDAL - 12:30PM to 1PM
saw enough of BEAT SMUGGLAZ.. so hopped on down to the neighboring essential stage.. to check these guys, played one or 2 gigs with these guys years ago.. and they're damn funny bastards.. running that whole SLIPKNOT theatrical angle.. the entire band dressed in white, white faces.. screaming like chimps.. a class act.. and worked well in a BIG DAY OUT setting.. this is an example of a local band WORKING a big stage successfully.. somehow I felt the vibe more.. I dunno.. kill me if ya disagree.. but they could "fill" the stage..
THE DARKNESS - 1:15PM to 2PM
one of the "must see" acts of the BDO.. at least merely for the comical glamrock / death metal nutty theatrics and idiotic cliches.. like a big 'ol acid flashback to the 80's.. but funny.. yup, these guys were the shit.. we were miles away from the stage watching it.. and come to think of it.. should've been in the thick of the mosh.. would've been a crankin' one.. they had the sense of humour, they rocked hard.. nice one guys..
SALMONELLA DUB - 1:15PM to 2PM
caught a bit of these guys.. and um.. nothing really of note..
sorta wished I felt some vibe here.. coz I kinda dig that whole rastafarian electronica vibe..
THE DATSUNS - 2PM to 2:50PM
I think I only heard these guys, coz Stuckey wanted to get riiight in the front.. for the BLACK EYED PEAS.. so, meanwhile.. waiting.. we heard the Datsuns on the neighboring main stage.. didn't realise these guys did that kickarse little rocker - "MOTHERFUCKER FROM HELL".. and yeah, these guys rocked out.. they pushed it to the bleeding edge.. nice distraction dudes..
BLACK EYED PEAS - 2:50PM to 3:40PM
ok.. so their new album "ELEPHUNK" totally licks donkeys balls.. I wouldn't even wipe me arse on it.. wot with it's cheesy R&B / Justin Timberlake flavours.. (bleck!).. but they DID release the album "Bridging the Gap" in the late 90's.. and that album ROCKED.. so, thought I'd give these guys a go.. and Stuckey wuz idiotic keen to see 'em.. so.. at the front of the crowd for this one..
really didn't think a (now commercially cheesy) hiphop act would warrant such psychotic mosh pit action.. we even had crowd surfers.. one almost flew right at my head and knocked me digital camera out've me hand.. the obnoxious little bastard.. coz.. there I wuz.. busily gettin' photo's of that chick from that band.. oooooh yeah, she can make it move.. WOOOYEAAH!..
overall tho'.. their set wuz severly lacking in energy.. they played some oldskool classics.. (damn nice), played some stuff I never heard of.. (mostly just ignorance) tried, in a really lame way to work the crowd.. I mean.. shit.. seriously.. trying the idea of getting the entire crowd to "GET DOWN LOW".. over and over.. just doesn't work... it didn't work the 1st time.. and it sure as hell didn't work the next 8 times you idiots tried it.. things just got worse when they played their new shitty R&B album crap.. just sucked the energy for me.. but, y'know.. that chick.. she can move it.. that saved it for me.. plus, there wuz this bit when one of the dudes from the DARKNESS turned up to do a guitar solo.. that wuz cool.. still, Stuckey wuz getting pissed off at this stage.. coz one of the MC's kept snubbing our side of the crowd.. spitting in our direction.. and then hyping up the otherside.. Stuckey took it personally and held a grudge all day about it.. "duude.. when I meet that guy.. I'm gonna let him HAVE IT!!" (as for whether he actually DID ever meet the guy, that's a different story entirely..) either way.. the BLACK EYED PEAS.. considering their latest album.. wuz about as crap as I expected.. not really THAT bad.. but, not brilliant either
there wuz dragging moment around about here.. as we attempted to get some beers from the bar in the BOILER ROOM.. which is never a good idea.. seriously, at the BIG DAY OUT.. why bother wasting an HOUR to buy some beers.. who needs EXTRA stimulation.. when you got ALL this music?? (well.. unless you're lucky enough to sneak in yer own drugs.. ;) )
1200 TECHNIQUES - 4:30PM to 5:15PM
the Black Eyed Peas could learn a few things from these guys.. these guys KNOW how to rock it live.. busting out mad jams.. getting the crowd jumpin'.. the improv freestyle funky shit.. yup, these guys are gonna go far.. I dunno if my eyesight wuz decieving me.. but I think I saw dudes from the SLEEPY JACKSON up on the ramp next to the stage, checking these guys out.. but yeah, these guys were a class act all the way thru..
yet another rambling beer break here..
no idea why..
I think it wuz at this moment that I realised.. "oops.. getting a bit sunburnt here"..
JET - 5:45 to 6:30PM
the whole place wuz sardine packed like crazy, no room to breath, just ripe for a panick crazed stampede with the claustrophobia.. and the stench of human decay.. methinks they really should of got these guys on the main stage.. and not one of the side ones.. coz there wuz NO room to do anything.. when we got there.. we saw some nutty chick on stage with a tamborine rocking out with the band.. only later did I realise.. (after reading this week's RIP IT UP) that it wuz actually the chick from the DANDY WARHOLS.. so, seems like nutty collaborative team shit wuz all over this BDO.. (which is kinda cool.. should be more of it..) these guys rocked.. there's no doubt they would rock.. I just wish I had more room.. to.. I dunno.. DO ANYTHING.. it wuz seriously just TOO CRAZY in there.. but, hey.. you get that for being the IT BAND of the hour..
took a dead hour.. to grab some munchies..
went for the traditional INDIAN FOOD feast, coz it always does the trick.. (note: AVOID THE VINDALOO, I did that back in 2002 and it almost killed me.. dammit..)..
THE STROKES 7:30PM to 8:30PM
I think these guys seriously suit a smaller club / pub venue.. more than the BIG DAY OUT.. coz, somehow the vibe didn't work for me.. they were cool n everything, don't get me wrong.. but, something felt missing for me.. some of that energy, lost.. in an open venue.. still caught enough of their set.. to say "I was there"..
APHEX TWIN + LUKE VIBERT - 7:15PM to 8:45PM
the big FREAKING DISSAPPOINTMENT of the BIG DAY OUT.. coz, hey.. Aphex Twin wuz one of the big reasons I WENT to this years BDO (besides.. y'know.. you just GOTTA go to the BDO.. I mean.. shit.. wot reason do you have for staying home? sheeeesh!). Anywaze.. wot can I say.. the entire gig, wuz played out.. from 2 heads hidden behind laptop PC's.. hidden behind these huuuuge stage blocks.. so, all you saw ALL gig.. besides the video displays.. wuz 2 somewhat concealed heads behind laptops.. doing.. NOTHING.. I mean, shit... you couldn't see Aphex Twin at ALL the entire gig.. he wuz so well hidden.. in fact, the ONLY thing he did. wuz at the end.. he went "thumbs up".. and freaking LEFT.. I mean.. WOT THE FUCK??
and the music itself wuzn't much to speak of.. I'm very familiar with Aphex Twin.. so, it's not due to ignorance.. but, the whole set wuz ( a ) lacking any kind've crankin' intensity ( b ) lacking any known "anthems" of Aphex Twin.. of which there are many - DONKEY RHUBARB, ON, COME TO DADDY, BOY / GIRL, WINDOWLICKER.. etc.. ( c ) lacking any actual experimentation.. or any cool weirdness factor.. I dunno, the whole thing just stank of laziness.. or.. some kinda aloof snobbery.. it really shat me off.. and you could tell the crowd wuz just hanging there.. waiting the entire gig.. for SOMETHING TO FREAKING HAPPEN.. but nothing ever did.. a big flushing toilet on that one.. Bleck!
AFRIKA BAMBAATAA - 8:30PM to 9:30PM
this wuz freaking hilarious.. definitely a funny highlight of the BDO.. when we got there it seemed innocent enough, just some oldskool flavoured B-BOY hiphop action.. slo-mo oldskool looping breakbeats, a bunch of B-BOY dudes flipflopping all over the joint and body poppin n floor spinning n shit... with an MC yelling out the usual measure of the get-the-party-started cliches.. but, then.. things got interesting.. I dunno if it wuz just the MC pimping for Bambaataa.. or perhaps lining up dates for himself after the BDO.. but, he started pulling all these hot chicks from the crowd.. got 'em on stage.. got 'em dancing.. till.. the WHOLE FREAKING STAGE wuz just filled with these funny chicks.. bumpin' n grinding away.. with the MC woopin' it up crazy, and getting all hyper.. if he saw any HINT of girl on girl funk action.. even trying to line up some 3'some girl frenzy.. damn funny to watch, and perhaps.. a little creepy.. but, definitely a funny hightlight.. makes me wonder wot the hell Africa Bambaataa thought about all of the MC antics.. sitting at the back in his little DJ booth.. wacky stuff..
METALLICA - 8:45PM to 10:30PM
despite wot I think of Metallica.. despite how much I reckon they just sold out, when they went after NAPSTER with all that lawsuit action.. and how much I think their latest album - ST. ANGER is just a piece of shit... and how much I just couldn't give a rats either way, whether they lived or died.. there wuz no denying.. no escaping their live set.. I mean, these BASTARDS wouldn't let ya leave.. everytime we thought do duck off.. to catch some FLAMING LIPS.. or the start of BASEMENT JAXX.. Metallica would fire up one of their classics - ONE, ENTER SANDMAN.. etc.. etc.. every song wuz a deja vu flashback.. a freakin' classic.. there wuz just no escaping.. and then, just when you thought it wuz over.. and you could leave.. the freaking bastards unleashed volley after volley of fireworks from the stage.. DAAAMN.. you guys made me miss the FLAMING LIPS.. you BAAASTARDS (yes.. I heard they were brilliant.. that I wuz crazy to miss them.. oh THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH METALLICA.. you guys ROCK.. and I FUCKEN HATE THE LOT OF Y'UZ )
BASEMENT JAXX - 10PM to 11:45PM
I really wuzn't expecting much from these guys, expecting just a DJ set.. and, from that.. not much.. considering I've got the albums.. and they're a mixed bag on record.. some cool songs.. some just annoying. and some downright cheesy.. I really didn't know wot to expect.. and didn't expect much.. but.. HOLY CRAP THESE GUYS FUCKEN ROCKED!! I mean.. I wuz gibbering like a spastic by the end.. they seriously made it one of THE BEST FREAKING FINALES at a BIG DAY OUT.. like.. ever.. and YES, I wuz at the BDO back in 2000.. when the CHEMICAL BROTHERS finished the night.. BASEMENT JAXX beat them.. I didn't believe it possible.. but, there.. I said it.. these guys were freakin' awesome..
of course.. it helped we were situated near the front.. in direct firing range of the main left speaker.. rattling our innards with it's volley after volley of earthquaking bass.. but, yeah.. wot can I say.. they were FUNKY as FUCK.. LOUD as FUCK.. they had enough PUNK energy, to make me forget the cheesy HOUSE MUZAK aspects.. and damn, but wuzn't the stage antics just freaky.. they had everything up there.. the 2 main dudes.. tagteaming between keyboard decks.. to vocals, to guitar, to bongos.. 2 funny little packrat black chicks with crazy hair, charging head on at each other and picking fights.. this BIG diva black chick with the soaring voice and the mile high afro.. and this freaking HOT punk electro chick.. and she just fucken ROCKED.. there wuz this one song - CISH CASH.. where she fronts the stage.. head to toe in skintight leather PVC.. dragging around one of them funny little black chicks on a dog leash.. strutting around the stage.. and SCREAMING like a satanic fiend.. HOLY CRAP.. I wuz a dribbling loon all thru that song.. fucken A-grade.. just wish my camera hadn't ran out've batteries well before that gig.. otherwise.. I woulda got some footage.. d'oh.. but yeah.. OH MY FREAKING GAWD the BASEMENT JAXX rocked it.. fucken niiiice one guys..
and.. so.. that wuz the BIG DAY OUT..
there wuz some nuttiness AFTER the gig.. some afterparties in various locations..
but, nothing worth speaking of here..
all in all.. one of the classic BDO's.. right up there with 1997 (with the PRODIGY) and 2000 (Red Hot Chili Peppers / Foo Fighters / Chemical Brothers / Nine Inch Nails.. oooh yes!)
phew.. so you can see why I wuz dead the next few days after..
all lobster red sunburnt, voice trashed.. croaking like a frog, creaking joints.. yeaaooouch..
whoa.. wot a day..
so.. who's playing the NEXT BDO.. eh? ;)
