I've become increasingly aware of an annoying phone conversational habit of late,
something that really drives me nuts..
I dunno if it's a strategy, but I know my boss likes to use this trick..
and he's an ex army dude or somethin'. so, I'd expect he'd use a few tricks like this..
(note: my boss otherwise known as "Stan da Man" is actually more or less cool.. but he's also known as a hardcore negotiator.. so, when he does this, I expect it's with some kind've intent..)
it's a trick that works as follows..
- person on other end of the phone remains silent for long awkward spaces of time, happily waiting till I freak out and blab like an idiot in effort to fill those awkward spaces.. (sometimes accidentally blurting out information I wish I didn't to FILL those spaces..)
I know it can't be me..
coz, usually I work good 2 way conversational traffic..
well, ok.. some people think I'm a raving lunatic on the phone.. (hi JOE :-P )
but at least I can work a conversation enough to notice it odd when I encounter these "awkward silences"..
this is not you're usual - awkward silence, spaced by their um's or er's and occassional nervous twitters..
this is a much more calculated - stone dead silence _______________ sound of crickets chirping ______________ me then feelin' like an idiot, blurts out something stupid to break the silence..
makes me wonder..
is this a chapter everyone's read in "Sun Tzu's Art of War"?
(damn.. I gotta read that book..)
or some new wacky strategy people use to extract information from me?
either way.. it's fucken annoying..
perhaps my only method of counterstrike.. is to remain silent myself..
and like some demented staring contest.. wait till THEY freak and end up talkin.. ;)
