here's a thought..
I've noticed lately, they've been releasing more and more music CD's with "copy controlled" technology in 'em - like on the new MASSIVE ATTACK and PLACEBO albums for instance.. damn annoying things too.. basically, wot it does is when you play it on your PC.. instead of playing CD-AUDIO like normal CD's, it instead accesses some hidden CD-ROM portion to the CD, and plays these really shitty lo-fi MP3 style versions of the songs (that sound worse than lo-fi Real Audio / crappy tape quality).. it also stops you from accessing the actual CD-AUDIO so you cant make high quality copies of it..
also.. since it's not strictly a normal "CD-AUDIO" disc.. it usually fails to play in around 50% of your CD players.. especially if they incorporate any kind've PC technology.. fouling up DVD players, discmans, car stereos.. etc.. all.. in an effort to stop people being able to make copies of it, burn it onto bootleg CD's.. and spread onto the internet.. where they can simply steal music for free.. coz, kiddies.. STEALING MUSIC IS BAD.. M'KAY?
yup.. record companies are punishing us for stealing music, we the public are BAAAAAD PEOPLE!
but, are we really the ONLY guilty party..?
(1) despite these albums being "copy-controlled" and therefore "impossible" to copy, it hasn't stopped me from downloading BOTH off the internet.. and really, which do I prefer? a commercially bought CD that sounds like shit on my PC and wont play on 1/2 my audio equipment..? OR.. some hi-fi MP3's which I can happily copy / convert and burn onto an AUDIO CD.. that'll play anywhere AND everywhere? geee.. hard choice?
(2) the record companies would like to think that people buying the CD's are responsible for copying it and then spreading it on the internet.. and sure, it's not impossible.. even an idiot like ME could copy these "copy-controlled" CD's.. takes a bit of effort.. but it's not impossible..
BUT.. wot about pre-release albums.. available on the internet BEFORE they're sold in the shops?
who the hell had access to them to begin with? who leaked the copy onto the internet?
and all it takes.. is ONE copy.. to spread the sucker..
so, why are these record company idiots "copy-controlling" our CD's.. and selling us this incompatible crap.. when we can download them anywaze?
doesn't it defeat the purpose of BUYING a CD.. if you're being PUNISHED for it!!!??
here I am.. downloading the new RADIOHEAD CD - "Hail to the Thief".. it's not gonna be out in shops till sometime in June..
nobody's bought it yet, so it's not one of us "evil" consumers leakin' it onto the internet..
so.. you gotta wonder.. who the hell spreads these CD's?
is it someone from the record company to create hype? is it a music journalist doing it for the hell of it? someone in the recording studio? WHERE DO THEY COME FROM!!??
yup.. just a thought
but who'ever invented "copy-controlled" CD technology are idiots..
