well, apparently.. according to some unreliable sources (ie: my own foggy recollection), I went to a CD launch for "YOUR MOTIVE FOR" last night.. with the release of their first single "Being Around You".. my memory of it, kinda foggy.. as perhaps an indirect result of the 12-13 beers I drank... (ooooh maaan wuz my head blurry when I woke up today.. YEEEESH!)
now I could post a little review of how the gig went, but.. I seriously can't remember that much of it.. except that the beer wuz unusually expensive.. and the candy machines would only dispense Skittles in $1 amounts (bastards)..
but, as a little public service for these dudes, since.. y'know.. they're friends of mine.. and occassionally provide me with free beer (always most appreciated) I'm gonna review their CD instead..
first thing's first.. the artwork for the CD is the best I've ever seen.. it's like a masterpiece of mindshattering brilliance.. so subtle and understated, yet.. pulsating with freakish masterstrokes of something that only a genius could express.. oh yes, THIS is what CD art should aspire to, if it were so lucky to even catch a glimpse of this sorta inspired imaging.. HAHAHAHHAHAHHA... ok, to be honest.. I actually DESIGNED the art for the CD, so.. perhaps I should just shut up now ;) (but hey, for 5 hours work, I'm quite happy with it..)
there's 3 songs on it.. total of 10 minutes, so it all runs by very quickly.. a real hit n run, well suited for easy digestion.. and perhaps well marketed for heavy radio rotation..
Song 1. "Being Around You".. is an obvious grab for attention.. it's good, but perhaps a bit too bleedingly obvious.. too overstated, and.. well, seriously cheesy.. (but hey, at least it ain't trying to hide it's intentions.. listen to that openin' keyboard riff.. that's 100% radio cheese.. brilliant ;) ).. also, Heath's voice sounds a little odd.. a bit too heavy on the high register.. almost like he's trying to hammer that part of his voice just before breakin' the falsetto barrier.. so it sounds hoarse.. and perhaps pleadingly desperate.. as if to say.. it's chant of "Being Around You".. is more a request than a declaration.. but, I'm probably deconstructing this too much.. it's a well put together song, but I suspect if I heard it on the radio too often.. I may have to hit my head against a wall till it wuz nothing but a bleeding stump..
Song 2. "First" - I really can't fault this song, it's for me the real obvious high-rotation radio-play song.. coz you can hear it again and again, and yet find more layers to it.. the elements seem really well balanced.. and that keyboard lead melody works perfectly as an addictive hook.. plus, it rocks out really nicely near the end.. with that funkin' hammering guitar.. woooyeaaah!
Josh's voice sounds a little bit unconventional, a bit gravelly.. but, well suited as the expressive medium.. of, well.. wot'ever the hell he's singin' about.. (I could figure it out.. but, ah fukkit.. I'd rather just funk out to it instead..). Yup.. this puppy's got "HIT" written all over it.. dug it the first time I heard it live, and it translates perfectly to CD..
Song 3. "Pete Townshend" - there's something really strangely familiar about this, spooky even.. like, for some reason it feels identical to something "You Am I" wrote.. (did they have a song, "Cathy's Clown".. or something? coz.. it reminds me a LOT of something like that..) I guess the You Am I fans could answer that better.. anywaze, it's still a damn good song.. not too overt, not cheesy, it just rocks out damn nicely and it all floats around in this thick soupy cruisy kinda way.. all wall of humming pulsating harmonics.. which I really like.. (being the fan of the "Sonic Youth" wall of noise vibe..) and in this case Heath's voice works really well.. coz, it seems to float seamlessly with everything else.. to the point you can't really pick everything out seperately.. it's actually just sounds like 4 dude's in a room, jamming together as one cohesive entity.. (or, perhaps.. y'know.. I'm insane..), so yeah.. this song is just y'know.. pure ROCK 101.. it'll give these kiddies street cred (even if it does sound a LOT like something "You Am I" wrote.. plus, wuzn't Pete Townshend busted for kiddie porn??)
anywaze.. overall, it's a really well put together product.. the sound production is top notch and fault'less.. brilliant textures of sound, complex layering.. a good varied selections of songs - from the cheesy, to the addictive, to just plain pure-rock.. it doesn't sound like a live pub rock band crammed into a studio and coming out sounding all wrong and artificial.. wot you'd hear live, more or less.. is wot you hear on this CD.. making it a LOT better than a lot of the usual local releases you hear.. which is a damn good thing ;)
so yeah.. thumbs up guys.. and the CD art seriously rocks too! (ok ok.. I'll stop.. HAHAHHAHHAHA)
