been a bit quiet lately on this thing..
guess I've been far too stunned-mullet.. watching the Gulf War sequel being played out on tv.. gulpin' air, staring blankly.. and uttering over and over "I'm a fish.. I'm a fish.. I'm a fish..", with such a level of media saturation, who has room to think?
still it freaks me out, the level of media coverage on this..
here's some examples of wot I've seen, which.. seriously defy's belief.. and / or, any level of sanity..
(1) NBC has this reporter, on the advancing tank divisions advancing towards Baghdad from the south of IRAQ, they cross live to him.. and there he is.. making reports to camera, in flakjacket and helmet.. on a tank as it's whizzing along towards Baghdad...
stopping for the odd fuel break, there you see him, asking how various aspects of the army operates.. from bio/chem suits, to food rations.. while soldiers in the background wave, grin.. and pull faces..
(2) they had some army divisions, exchanging fire with the enemy in one of the southern IRAQ cities.. and on camera there's a US soldier, lying on a hill.. rifle poised at a house with some possible civilians / military.. finger on the trigger, waiting for any possible suspicious actions.. and in deepest concentration, he's being interrupted by an interviewer with a microphone in his hand - "so, what is it you're seeing right now?"
(3) several different camera crews, positioned on balconies in Baghdad.. aimed at the cityscape.. watching the "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign, like it's a fireworks display.. at one stage showing a 4-way splitscreen view.. with different commentary being offered by each of 'em..
this whole thing reminds me, when they landed US marines in Somalia.. apparently under cover of darkness, in the utmost secrecy.. but, the camera crews had got there first.. and there they are.. making a landing.. flooded by the lights of the video cameras..
it's like they give us SO MUCH visual, so much coverage, we just munch down our popcorn and enjoy the "sports coverage" that war has become, complete with commentators, interviews with the players, etc.. it's not war, it's all just a game.. ready to buy on DVD, play on ya X-BOX, or buy as tradeable playing cards, posters, figurines..
seriously does my head in..
