THE EVIL EMPIRE
a thought occured to me, whilst I wuz watching "THE PATRIOT" (which I had taped while I wuz out). it's odd to think.. that all along, perhaps thru cheesy Hollywood propaganda.. or perhaps thru the whole cold war thing, or even back to World War 2 and 1.. we've always seem the USA.. as the good guys.. sure, a bit dopey in their excesses.. known for the cheesy spectacle.. the obssessive flag waving and gun toting.. but, otherwise.. cheerfully benevolent.. we liked the ideal of USA, it wuz kinda silly.. but a lot of fun netherless..
perhaps it started from the whole underdog mentality, as illustrated in the movie, "THE PATRIOT".. thru all odds, the American colonists beat the mighty and annoying British Empire.. and made their own upstart nation.. as a raised 1 finger salute to insult the glorious and obnoxious majesty that wuz the British Monarchy.
and.. us Australians, we like the underdog.. we like to see Goliath beaten.. we laugh when the kid with the pea-shooter finds a crucial structural weakness.. and takes down a whole army.. we saw ourselves in the USA, we followed their lead.. we wanted to be just like them.. and thru the world, little democracies sprouted up everywhere like mushrooms..
but, notice how the opinion has shifted over the years...
as the British Empire shrank and crumbled, thru incompetance, thru arrogance, thru choke-hold foreign diplomacy.. we saw the United States of America rise.. and, in the power vacuum increasingly left by the British Empire.. they came to replace it as the main superpower in the world..
thru Hollywood.. and the ideals of the "Free World" and "Democracy".. (nice concepts, if they work) we came to see the United States of America.. as freedom fighters, good 'ol buddies.. dudes you can trust.. we're just like you.. but with a hulking arsenal of weaponry to fight the good fight..
it's a nice idea.. ain't it?
we shared the dream, we shared the laughs, we scoffed down some popcorn and enjoyed the CGI gimickry..
so nice to see that George W Bush (or as some like to call him - President Shrub) has fucked up that ideal for all of us..
thru ham fisted foreign policy, and imperialistic sabre rattling.. he's turned foreign opinion of the USA.. from being seen as a loveable benevolent giant promoting a democratic free-world.. to an ultraviolent tyrannical killing machine of smart bombs, stealth fighters, nuclear weapons, CIA assassins, black ops, guns in high schools, out've control multinational corporations, bleeding 3rd world countries for natural resources, environmental holocaust.. thru the grand incompetance of President Shrub.. and all the evil (stupid) things he's done.. we're reminded of President Shrub senior.. and then back to Nixon.. and, sooner or later.. thru these holes.. the whole tapestry falls..
y'know.. good 'ol Bill Clinton, thru all his comical faults.. did so much of a better job making the USA look good to the rest of the world.. gosh I miss the loveable tubby bastard ;)
a lot of us intelligent people point the blame at the governments, the CEO's.. (we love the people, we hate those in control) and we source our protests and anguish to them.. but, not everyone in this world is that focused.. they simply see the USA behind their woes.. and they blindly lash out at the things that symbolise the USA.. because, like the British Empire once was.. the USA is now seen as the obnoxious tyrant.. the Goliath that we wish to crush.. and the rest of the world is the underdog..
we see the USA is sending us into World War 3..
we see a world blindly spiraling into bloodshed and destruction..
where once the USA ended wars to bring peace, they now want to start wars to "bring peace"..
doesn't it just make you sick??
don't you feel small and powerless to stop this insanity?
and don't even get me started on our dopey prime minister - John Howard, who merely follows George W Bush like a puppy.. I've being trying to the vote out that idiot in every election since he got in, in 1996..
my point is..
we used to believe in the USA, they had the right idea, they had the dream, we believed the happy Hollywood ending, we enjoyed the cinematic surreality they gave us..
but now, as the scripts get worse, the plots more ridiculous, the characters more hollow and fake.. all we see is the bullshit.. and nobody believes the crap they're selling us..
get your act together President Shrub..
or you'll find your audience walking out in disgust..
