is it just me, or is the art of the "personal" e-mail dying a quick death..
it used to be I'd actually look forward to checkin' my e-mail, to see wot kinda quirky little rant or outburst I'd be greeted with next.. but since the invention of countless chat programs - ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger, mIRC.. etc etc.. no-one really gives a shit about personal e-mails anymore.. every day, twice a day (more or less) I'll check my e-mail.. only to find yet more SPAM, seemingly from places I've never visited or ever would want to visit.. cloggin' with increasing manevolence.. I've installed SPAM filters / blockers, used "sacrificial" e-mail addresses wherever useful to deflect them.. but, in the end.. I just get SPAM, work related stuff and jokes which in all honestly, I'll never read..
so.. guess I appreciate the extra effort some people go to.. when they actually DO send actual e-mails...
when you think about it, it seems as a society we're hiding behind more and more communications technology which allow us the convenience to never actually communicate with anyone.. ever.. you invent the postal system - and we just end up with junk mail, bills, and bland homogenised greeting cards.. you invent the telephone - and we invent answering machines, call-waiting, telemarketing, caller ID.. to deflect us away from ever wanting to talk, coz in the end.. we're either talking to a machine.. or being interrupted by one.. or waiting hours pulling our eyeballs out've our skull in frustration waiting on a machine while it puts us on hold.. ARRRRGGGHHHH!!! even with mobile phones.. seemingly a technology that allows you to contact someone in an instance.. we invent technologies to block, confuse and dilute that - voice mail, SMS.. endless cloggin' haze designed to make conversation by proxy.. not conversation face to face..
the uncomfortable silence seems more inviting every day.. just to shut up the endless / meaningless white noise.. our entire language merely becoming one giant all-purpose greeting card, a product placement, a line of a script..
I remember someone said, that in an age surrounded by hundreds of different telecommunications networks.. we seem more alone than ever before..
so.. just a thought.. actually TALK TO SOMEONE YA FREAK!!
might actually do ya some good :-)
