anywaze, I also went to a gig tonight.. Heidi wanted a gig review.. so, here goes..
WOKKA playing at the PRINCE ALBERT, Thurs Oct 10th 2002
note: despite the name of the venue.. "PRINCE ALBERT" isn't some building shaped like a giant penis, with a chunk of metal thru it.. just like the "SUPERMILD" isn't actually a nightclub shaped like a giant pack of low-menthol cigarettes..
so, I get there reasonably early (7:30PM) after ducking out of that music biz launch.. and grab some dinner (hmmm.. skewered prawns with sweet chilli sauce and rice.. niiiice!), WOKKA's the only dude playing on the night.. and for those of you who don't know.. here's a brief description of wot he does - imagine if you will.. an exceptionally stoner mellow hairy asian dude.. seemingly at peace with the universe.. getting behind the piano.. and proceeding to beat the living shit out've the mic + keyboard.. like some demented mix between (a) a Rottweiler / German Shepherd / Wolverine (b) Billy Corgan on a bad hair day (c) Trent Reznor (d) the Jerry Springer show during a feeding frenzy... yup, such an ANGRY voice, from such a MELLOW dude.. (where does he get the energy? some blame the extra strong "fishermen's friends" breathmints..)
so.. how wuz the gig? well.. he spent the first set of the night, attempting to dismantle a piano from the inside out.. (apparently the PRINCE ALBERT has a dusty old piano they usually keep tucked away in the alley between the 1st and 2nd entry doors to the men's toilet.. but, for this occassion.. they hosed it off.. banged the cockroaches out.. and let Wokka play on it).. not the best sound from it.. (it wuz kind've soft and out've tune), but still trippy to see him play an ACTUAL piano.. with all the "guts" of it exposed.. key hammers oscillating in and out've view.. strings flickering around like tiny screaming catterpillars.. (yup.. with descriptions like that.. the beer must've been good!)
2nd set, on his usual twin setup of silver and black keyboards.. otherwise nicknamed as "Lucifer" and "Nosferatu" (ok, yes.. I just made that up). not much to comment on this 2nd set it wuz just Wokka at his usual screaming painful best.. (and hey.. the cheap dark-ale wuz really starting to kick in at the time..), but.. still, overall.. not too bad for a lazy Thursday night.. (most of the night, wuz a bit of a blur.. coz, hey.. I didn't get my usual dose of coffee today.. damn? why did I go and do that to meself?)
